AI Integration Drives Australian Entry-Level Job Vacancies to Decade Low

Entry-level and graduate job vacancies in Australia have plummeted to 11 percent of all available positions, the lowest level in ten years. Anglicare Australia reports that the integration of artificial intelligence and automation is the primary driver of this decline, particularly within the retail and hospitality sectors. These industries have increasingly replaced traditional junior roles with self-service tools and automated scheduling systems.

According to the Anglicare report, this trend is mirrored by mass layoffs at major corporations integrating AI into their operations. These include Meta, Amazon Prime Video, and WiseTech. Additionally, Atlassian is cutting 1,600 jobs globally, with 500 of those redundancies occurring specifically in Australia.

Recruitment experts warn that the automation of repetitive, process-driven tasks is removing the essential foundations of work. This shift eliminates the environment where young employees typically develop professional judgment and communication skills. As a result, employers now expect junior candidates to possess high levels of technical confidence and analytical ability from their first day of employment.

These developments create a structural gap in the workforce. By removing the entry-stage roles that foster professional growth, organizations risk a future where new graduates lack the practical experience necessary to meet rising corporate expectations, making it significantly harder for young people to establish a career start.
