Michel Barnier Outlines Conditions for UK to Rejoin EU

Michel Barnier stated the United Kingdom could rejoin the European Union without adopting the euro, provided it accepts full single market rules.

Former European Union lead negotiator Michel Barnier stated that the United Kingdom could potentially rejoin the bloc without being obligated to adopt the euro. Speaking to Sky News, Barnier noted that while new member states are typically legally required to join the euro area, a negotiated exemption for the UK would be possible.

Barnier emphasized that the EU would not compromise on the fundamental rules of the single market, specifically the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital. He asserted that there is no possibility for "cherry-picking" or a single market "a la carte," meaning the UK would have to accept full freedom of movement to regain membership.

Barnier clarified that the decision to seek membership again rests entirely with the UK government and its people.
