Republicans and Democrats Secure Nominations in Minnesota Primaries

Republican incumbents secured key nominations in Minnesota primary elections on Tuesday. Representative Finstad won the Republican primary for the state's 1st Congressional District, defeating challengers Gregory Goetzman and Oliver Morlan. Finstad now advances to the November general election, where he will face the winner of a Democratic primary between former teachers-union leader Alex Eaton and small business owner Jake Johnson. The Cook Political Report has downgraded the district from solid Republican to lean Republican.

In the race for Minnesota Senate District 19, Republican incumbent and deputy minority leader John Jasinski won his nomination with 70% of the vote, defeating Crystal Alan. Jasinski stated his priorities for the general election include affordability, controlling government spending, and addressing the misuse of state funds.

Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate and former pastor Sam Powell secured the nomination for Senate District 19 with 80% of the vote, defeating outgoing city Councilor Adama Doumbouya. A self-described progressive, Powell campaigned on a platform of universal healthcare and improving healthcare access and quality for rural communities.
