Mahama Activates Idle Waste Stations to Clear Accra Flood Debris
President John Dramani Mahama ordered the immediate opening of six long-dormant waste transfer stations to accelerate refuse evacuation following devastating floods in the Greater Accra Region.
President John Dramani Mahama directed Zoomlion Ghana Limited to immediately operationalize six waste transfer stations in the Greater Accra Region to accelerate the evacuation of refuse following devastating floods. During a National Clean-up Exercise titled "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods," the President identified stations in Achimota, Teshie, Kpone, Ashaiman, Pantang, and Adipa that had remained idle for approximately nine years.
These stations now serve as temporary collection and compaction points, eliminating the need for waste collectors to travel long distances to facilities such as the Accra Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) and ACARP. To support the recovery, Zoomlion deployed 150 haulage trucks, 30 compactors, 60 long-haul trailers, and over 3,000 personnel across 29 districts.
President Mahama announced the establishment of a monthly national clean-up day and confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces and other state agencies will continue clearing waste from drains beyond the official campaign. The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, conducted assessments of the waste chain to ensure 24-hour operations and prevent debris from returning to drains during subsequent rainfall.
