BC Parties Pledge SkyTrain Extension to Surrey's Newton
The BC NDP and BC Conservatives both pledged to extend the SkyTrain to Surrey's Newton neighbourhood days before the October 24 provincial election.
The British Columbia Conservatives and the New Democratic Party (NDP) both pledged to extend the SkyTrain transit line along the King George Boulevard corridor to Surrey's Newton neighbourhood on October 20, 2026. The simultaneous announcements occur just days before the October 24 provincial election.
David Eby, leader of the NDP, stated his party has earmarked $250 million for the expansion. He noted that an existing factory producing giant concrete components is already operational, which would reduce overall costs. The BC Conservatives also committed to the extension, pledging to work with the federal government for funding while arguing that Newton residents have waited eight years for rapid transit since light rail plans were scrapped in 2018.
In other campaign developments, Eby announced a $30 million commitment for an in-patient unit at Kelowna General Hospital. Meanwhile, Vancouver mayor-elect Pete Fry endorsed Green Party leader Emily Lowan. Elections BC reported that advance polling turnout is down approximately four per cent compared to the 2024 election, with roughly 571,000 ballots cast over the first four days.
