Anthropic Appoints Harvard Astrophysicist to Long-Term Benefit Trust
Anthropic appointed Harvard astrophysicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust as the company prepares for a potential IPO with a $2 trillion valuation.
Anthropic appointed Christopher Stubbs, a Harvard University astrophysicist and former Dean of Science, to its Long-Term Benefit Trust. Stubbs becomes the first physicist to join the Trust, which includes members such as Ben Bernanke and Richard Fontaine. The Trust holds a special class of non-economic stock that allows it to elect a majority of the company's seven-person board to ensure the company adheres to its mission of responsible development for the long-term benefit of humanity.
This appointment occurs as the AI company prepares for a potential initial public offering as early as next month, with reports suggesting a valuation exceeding $2 trillion. Anthropic's governance structure, which includes the Trust and planned super-voting shares for founders, has faced criticism for potentially limiting the influence of public shareholders.
In a related effort to address the societal impact of its technology, the company recently announced a Public Benefit Fund. This initiative allocates 5% of Anthropic's shares to support philanthropic organizations and individuals negatively impacted by AI automation.
