China Conducts Military Patrols Near Disputed Scarborough Shoal
The People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command deployed naval and air forces for combat readiness patrols around Scarborough Shoal in response to Philippine activities.
The People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command conducted naval and air combat readiness patrols around Scarborough Shoal, also known as Huangyan Dao, on October 30. These operations occurred alongside law-enforcement patrols carried out by the China Coast Guard in the same waters and airspace.
Beijing described the maneuvers as a necessary countermeasure to address rights-violations and provocative acts by the Philippines. Military officials stated the patrols, which have intensified since early October, are intended to enhance control and management of the region to safeguard Chinese sovereignty and security.
The deployment follows a two-day Association of Southeast Asian Nations defense gathering, during which China accused an unnamed Philippine politician of obstructing its participation. While China claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea through its nine-dash line, it continues to reject a 2016 international arbitral tribunal ruling that found those claims lacked a legal basis. The Philippine military and the Philippine embassy in Beijing have not yet responded to requests for comment.
