China Names Deutsche Bank First European Renminbi Clearing Bank
China appointed Deutsche Bank as its first European renminbi clearing bank to facilitate cross-border transactions and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
The government of China has named Deutsche Bank as a clearing bank for the renminbi, the first time a European lender has received this designation. The bank will provide direct end-to-end processing, clearing, and settlement services for cross-border renminbi transactions for European businesses and financial institutions, serving as a bridge to China's onshore payment systems, capital markets, and liquidity infrastructure.
This appointment is part of a broader strategy by China to internationalize its currency and decrease reliance on the U.S. dollar-dominated global payment system. The move follows similar initiatives in June, including the appointment of Standard Bank and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China as the Renminbi Clearing Bank of Africa.
Additionally, the People's Bank of China recently pledged in a five-year plan to maintain a stable exchange rate while expanding the currency's use in international trade and investment.
