Venezuela Government Pledges Judicial Overhaul Amid Election Protests

The Government of Venezuela concluded negotiations with opposition representatives in Caracas to address the nation's ongoing political crisis. As a primary outcome of the talks, the government announced plans to overhaul the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. While some former political prisoners welcomed the move as a necessary step to correct judicial failures, the announcement failed to quell public unrest.

Opposition members and former detainees launched street protests in the capital, demanding an immediate release of political prisoners and a concrete timetable for new elections. Human rights organizations, including Foro Penal, report that at least 391 dissidents remain in detention. Some activists allege that the state is using arrests as retaliation against the families of antigovernment figures.
