Photon Matrix Develops AI Laser System to Kill Mosquitoes

Photon Matrix developed an AI-enabled laser system that tracks and disables mosquitoes in flight using lidar technology and high-power laser bursts.

Chinese start-up Photon Matrix has developed the Laser Mosquito Air Defense System, an AI-enabled device designed to track and disable mosquitoes in flight. Based in Changzhou, the company utilizes a Class 4 laser to burn off mosquito wings in bursts lasting one-hundredth of a second. The system employs lidar technology derived from self-driving cars to map environments and pinpoint targets.

To prevent retinal injuries caused by high-power lasers, the device integrates AI cameras, radar, and infrared sensors. These components ensure the laser does not fire when people, pets, or reflective surfaces are detected. The company has implemented strict safety protocols for buyers, requiring a fingerprint for activation and the completion of a 15-question safety test.

Founder Wang Chuan stated that the company is currently seeking regulatory approval in China, Europe, and the United States. Photon Matrix reports receiving 5,000 prepaid orders and expects to begin mass production within weeks.
