OpenAI Seeks $50 Billion Amid Infrastructure and Legal Turmoil

OpenAI is negotiating a $50 billion funding round in the Middle East to finance a $1.4 trillion global AI infrastructure expansion.

Seeking to finance a $1.4 trillion global infrastructure plan, OpenAI is negotiating a funding round of at least $50 billion with Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, including Abu Dhabi's MGX and Mubadala, as well as Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. CEO Sam Altman recently visited the United Arab Emirates to secure this capital, which could push the company's valuation to between $750 billion and $830 billion. The company has also held discussions with Amazon.com Inc. for an additional $10 billion investment.

These financial efforts coincide with the launch of the Stargate Community plan on January 20, 2026. As part of a $500 billion project to build 10 gigawatts of capacity across the U.S., OpenAI committed to paying its own electricity and power infrastructure costs to prevent residential utility rate increases. This initiative, which involves campuses in Texas, Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico, and Wisconsin, follows similar pledges from Microsoft Corporation and responds to pressure from the Trump administration and bipartisan lawmakers.

Despite these expansions, OpenAI faces severe internal and external instability. Investor George Noble warned that the company is "falling apart in real time," citing a December 2025 "Code Red" memo, an executive talent exodus, and quarterly losses of $12 billion. Additionally, Elon Musk is pursuing a $134 billion lawsuit against the company for violating its original nonprofit mission, with a jury trial scheduled for April 2026.
