Republicans Maintain Utah Supermajority After Senate President Ousted
Republicans retain their supermajority in the Utah statehouse following a primary shift that unseated Senate President Stuart Adams.
The 2026 midterm elections in Utah have confirmed a continued Republican supermajority in the statehouse, though the party's internal power structure has shifted. In a significant upset during the June primaries, Stephanie Hollist unseated Senate President Stuart Adams, one of the most influential figures in state politics. Hollist is now competing in the general election for Senate District 7 against Democrat Garret Rushforth and Constitution Party candidate Jeffrey Ostler.
The removal of Adams has created a leadership vacuum, positioning Kirk Cullimore Jr. as a potential candidate for the Senate presidency. Cullimore is currently running for Senate District 19 against Democrat Shana Anderson.
Beyond the Republican internal struggle, the elections feature efforts to maintain third-party presence in the legislature. Emily Buss is seeking re-election to preserve the Forward Party's sole seat in the Utah statehouse.
