China Condemns Japan and Philippines Maritime Boundary Talks

China declared maritime boundary negotiations between Japan and the Philippines illegal after the two nations agreed to delimit their exclusive economic zones.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China condemned a joint decision by Japan and the Philippines to begin formal negotiations to delimit the maritime boundary of their exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. The agreement was announced via a joint statement during the Philippine President's visit to Japan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the area involved lies east of Taiwan, where China claims exclusive economic zone and continental shelf rights under domestic law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. China has lodged stern representations with both countries, declaring the talks completely illegal and null and void.

China characterized the negotiations as a severe violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations. The government urged both nations to cease actions undermining its maritime rights to safeguard regional stability.
