Democrats Win Key Michigan Congressional Primaries
Representative Rashida Tlaib and prosecutor Christina Hines won Democratic primaries in Michigan's 12th and 10th Congressional Districts on Tuesday.
Democratic candidates secured two key nominations in Michigan primaries on Tuesday, August 5, 2026. Rashida Tlaib, a member of the Squad and the Democratic Socialists of America, won the primary for the 12th Congressional District to seek a fifth term. Tlaib defeated Michigan state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen in a victory reflecting a broader trend of progressive and socialist success within the party across New York and Colorado.
In the 10th Congressional District, prosecutor Christina Hines won the Democratic nomination to challenge for a seat vacated by Republican Representative John James, who left the post to run for Governor of Michigan. Hines, a former special victims prosecutor, centered her campaign on affordability, increasing the minimum wage, and protecting federal programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
Democrats view the 10th District as a prime opportunity to flip the seat and reduce the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Both Tlaib and Hines will advance to the general election on November 3, 2026, with Tlaib considered heavily favored to retain her seat.
