Indonesia Constitutional Court Refuses to Disqualify Vice President Gibran
The Constitutional Court of Indonesia dismissed a petition to disqualify Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka over his foreign education credentials.
The Constitutional Court of Indonesia dismissed a petition seeking to disqualify Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka based on his education credentials. Petitioners argued that Gibran's foreign senior high school qualifications failed to meet the legal requirements for vice-presidential candidates under election law.
All nine judges ruled that Gibran cannot be disqualified because he has already been sworn into office. Judge Adies Kadir noted that while the court found no convincing evidence that Gibran possesses a foreign diploma equivalent to a senior high school completion, the court lacks the authority to annul his position. Chief Justice Suhartoyo added that the matter is no longer an election-results dispute and must be addressed by other institutions.
Lawyer Bambang Widjojanto, representing the petitioners, suggested the ruling could provide grounds for future impeachment. He further argued that Gibran may be prevented from standing in the next election unless he completes a government equivalency program.
