House Passes Act Penalizing Universities Boycotting Israel

The United States House of Representatives passed the Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act on Thursday in a 237-169 vote. The Republican-backed legislation targets universities that participate in boycotts of Israel or restrict students from engaging in exchange programs with the country.

Under the new law, institutions receiving federal student aid or funding for foreign language and international study programs must certify that they do not impose such restrictions. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Supporters of the measure argue it is a necessary tool to combat antisemitism. Representative Tim Walberg stated that federal taxpayer dollars should not support institutions that discriminate against Israel, while Democratic co-sponsor Josh Gottheimer argued the bill prevents the targeting of one country and religion.

Opponents, including Democratic Representatives Bobby Scott and Jerrold Nadler, contend the legislation is unnecessary and potentially violates First Amendment protections. Scott argued that the bill conflates student views with university policies, while Nadler maintained that opposing the bill is the only way to ensure all speech is equally protected.
