Jury Awards Taction Technology $5.7 Billion in Apple Patent Suit

A federal jury in San Diego awarded Taction Technology more than $5.7 billion in damages on Friday after finding that Apple Inc. infringed on two patents related to haptic feedback technology. The verdict marks the largest award of its kind in the United States.

The lawsuit, originally filed in 2021, alleged that the Taptic Engine used in iPhones and Apple Watches improperly utilized Taction's vibration-based tactile transducer technology. While the jury determined that Apple infringed on the patents, it did not find the infringement to be willful.

Apple Inc. has vowed to appeal the decision, asserting that its Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction's technology and that it does not use the company's inventions. The case had previously been dismissed by a lower court in 2023 before being revived by the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
