Brazil Court Orders Probe Into Foreign Election Interference
The Supreme Federal Court ordered Federal Police to investigate foreign interference and algorithm manipulation in Brazil's recent elections.
The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil ordered the Federal Police to investigate potential foreign interference in the country's recent electoral process. Justice Flavio Dino issued the order after evidence emerged that digital platform algorithms were manipulated to benefit conservative candidate Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party while disadvantaging President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party.
The probe specifically targets Meta and X for allegedly skewing algorithms to influence voters. Investigators are also examining whether the Bolsonaro campaign received prohibited foreign funding through the U.S.-based Rockbridge Network and Brazilian businessmen Tallis Gomes and Pedro Sang.
Additionally, the investigation will scrutinize the purchase of political advertising and election bets on platforms such as Polymarket. Authorities are exploring possible links between this political financing and foreign interests in Brazil's critical minerals and rare earths. The court action follows formal complaints filed by the Workers' Party and the Mission Party.
