China Expands Ultra-Deep Oil and Gas Production

China is accelerating ultra-deep oil and gas exploration in Xinjiang and Sichuan to reduce dependence on imported hydrocarbons.

China is accelerating the exploration and production of oil and gas from ultra-deep formations to increase domestic energy self-reliance amid global market turmoil. This national strategy focuses on technically challenging terrains and deep reservoirs to reduce the country's reliance on imported hydrocarbons.

In Xinjiang, PetroChina has produced over 26 million tons of oil equivalents from the Hade-Fuman oilfield. The company achieved this by drilling 485 wells at depths of 6,000 meters or more.

Meanwhile, the China Petroleum Chemical Company is developing the Ziyang Dongfeng field in Sichuan province. The Ministry of Natural Resources approved proven geological reserves of 235.687 billion cubic meters for the site, establishing it as the first ultra-deep shale gas field in China with reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters.
