OpenAI Launches Computer Use Tools for ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI is rolling out tools that allow AI agents to operate web browsers and software to automate data entry and scheduling.
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's capabilities by introducing Computer Use tools that enable AI agents to operate web browsers and software with human-like dexterity. The rollout includes a Chrome extension, cloud and in-app browsers, and integration into the Codex coding tool to automate tasks such as calendar scheduling, compliance, and data entry.
President Greg Brockman stated that the technology is now intended for anyone who does computer work, not just coders. The move positions OpenAI to compete with Anthropic, which launched its Claude Cowork feature in 2024. While OpenAI claims its technology has caught up to its rival, the tools currently face challenges regarding speed and generalization across different operating systems.
CEO Sam Altman cautioned that the utility of these agents is accompanied by potential privacy and security risks. To mitigate these concerns, OpenAI implemented a confirmation policy that requires explicit user permission before the AI deletes information or transmits data.
