Beavercreek Designates Beaver as Official Symbol Amid Buc-ee's Lawsuit

The Beavercreek City Council passed a resolution on August 11, 2026, formally recognizing the beaver as the city's official historic symbol. The legislation affirms the animal's connection to the community's identity and geography since the area's founding in 1803 and expresses support for local businesses, youth organizations, and schools using beaver imagery.

This action follows a federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed on July 28 by the Texas-based travel center chain Buc-ee's against Beaver's Mini Mart. Buc-ee's CEO Arch Aplin alleges the mini mart's sign resembles the Buc-ee's logo and is likely to cause consumer confusion. Aplin offered to drop the suit if Beaver's Mini Mart withdraws its trademark request. In response, mini mart owner Vik Boparai contends the sign predates Buc-ee's arrival in Huber Heights.

While the resolution occurred amid an outpouring of community support for the local store, city officials maintain the vote is a private matter unrelated to the pending litigation. Mayor Don Adams described the formalization of the symbol as a long-overdue action, while Schools Superintendent Paul Otten emphasized the mascot's role in representing the community's shared heritage.
