Meta Ad Growth Outpaces Google as Alphabet Market Cap Plummets
Meta Platforms reported 26% advertising revenue growth in the third quarter, while Alphabet Inc. saw its market capitalization drop $500 billion following disappointing earnings.
Meta Platforms reported a 26% increase in advertising revenue to $63.1 billion for the third quarter, significantly outpacing the 12% growth to $63.4 billion seen by Google's search division. Meta Platforms attributed this surge to AI-driven targeting tools that helped the company recover from previous Apple privacy restrictions. CFO Susan Li stated that advertisers adopting AI recommendations drove almost 5% more conversions.
In contrast, Alphabet Inc. faced severe revenue headwinds as AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta's Muse provided alternatives to traditional search, reducing clicks on advertising links. Following the disappointing earnings report, Alphabet experienced its worst stock market day in history, losing approximately $500 billion in market capitalization. Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler announced the deployment of Gemini models across the company's ads infrastructure to combat these trends.
Both companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with projected capital expenditures of $205 billion for Google and $145 billion for Meta this year. While Google is diversifying through its cloud computing division, Meta remains heavily dependent on advertising for 98% of its sales and is currently exploring subscription models.
