UK Government Expands Digital Services for PIP Claimants

The Department for Work and Pensions is expanding digital services for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants through the Health Transformation Programme. Minister of State Sir Stephen Timms announced that over 90% of new applicants can now submit health information online, a measure designed to increase accessibility and eliminate postage delays.

The government intends to eventually allow all customers to apply online, track their application progress, and report changes of circumstances digitally to reduce reliance on telephone enquiry lines. To support these goals, a new Health Assessment Service is currently being piloted in Health Transformation Areas in London and Birmingham. These reforms follow a record high of over four million PIP claimants in England and Wales as of July.

Simultaneously, Sir Stephen Timms is overseeing a full review of the benefit, co-chaired by Dr Clenton Farquharson and Sharon Brennan. The review includes nationwide meetings to ensure the system is fair and fit for the future. The government has committed to postponing any changes to PIP until the review delivers its recommendations, which are expected in autumn 2026.
