Moonshot AI Secures 20,000 Nvidia Chips via Alibaba Group

Moonshot AI accessed 20,000 Nvidia Hopper chips through Alibaba Group to train its 2.8 trillion parameter Kimi K3 model.

Moonshot AI secured access to a cluster of approximately 20,000 Nvidia Hopper-generation processors through a computing agreement with Alibaba Group. Alibaba, which is a major investor in the startup, provides this hardware via its cloud infrastructure to support the training of the Kimi K3 model, an open-weight AI system featuring 2.8 trillion parameters.

The arrangement demonstrates how Chinese AI developers are increasingly relying on domestic cloud providers to bypass U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors. While the company uses the Hopper chips provided by Alibaba for Kimi K3, it reportedly accesses newer Blackwell processors through Southeast Asia to develop its next AI model.
