Shapiro and Garrity Secure Nominations in Pennsylvania Primaries

Governor Josh Shapiro and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity won uncontested primaries to face each other in the November 2026 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election.

Pennsylvania held primary elections on May 19, 2026, to determine candidates for the November 3 general election. Josh Shapiro and Republican State Treasurer Stacy Garrity both won their respective gubernatorial nominations unopposed, setting up a high-stakes general election matchup. Shapiro enters the race with a significant fundraising advantage of nearly $38 million compared to Garrity's approximately $3 million. He has vowed to combat the "chaos, cruelty, and corruption" of the Donald Trump administration and plans to fund mass transit, build housing, and codify abortion rights if Democrats secure a Senate majority.

Shapiro collaborated with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to endorse establishment candidates over progressive rivals to maximize the party's chances of regaining a U.S. House majority. This strategy proved successful, as endorsed candidates Bob Harvie, Bob Brooks, and Janelle Stelson won their primaries to challenge Republican incumbents Brian Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mackenzie, and Scott Perry. In Philadelphia, State Representative Chris Rabb won the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring Representative Dwight Evans.

On the Republican side, attorney Jason Richey defeated John Ventre for the lieutenant governor nomination, while Democrat Austin Davis won his party's nomination unopposed. Secretary of State Al Schmidt reported a smooth process facilitated by 45,000 poll workers, though overall turnout was relatively low, with some counties reporting participation around 20 percent. The election cycle is viewed as a critical test of political momentum in a key swing state ahead of the 2026 midterms.
