Meghalaya to Pass Assembly Resolution Banning Uranium Mining
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the Meghalaya government will introduce a legislative resolution to formally ban uranium mining to protect public health and the environment.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on July 17, 2026, that the Meghalaya government will introduce a resolution in the State Assembly to formally oppose and prohibit uranium mining. The decision follows meetings with leaders of the ruling National People's Party and aims to eliminate ambiguity following media speculation and reports of central government efforts to revive mining activities.
The move comes after officials from the Atomic Minerals Directorate reportedly visited uranium-bearing areas in the South West Khasi Hills district. While Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh stated the matter remains under examination by the center, Sangma emphasized that his administration has never approved uranium mining and will oppose any attempts to initiate it.
The resolution addresses long-standing public concerns regarding radiation hazards, environmental degradation, and the displacement of indigenous communities. The Khasi Students’ Union has also pressured officials for legal measures against uranium extraction to safeguard the state's fragile ecology and public health.
