Moonshot AI Releases Kimi K3 Open-Weight Model Amid U.S. Accusations

Moonshot AI released the weights for its Kimi K3 model, sparking a U.S. government investigation into the use of restricted hardware and model distillation.

Moonshot AI released the full weights for its Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model on July 27, making the world's largest open-weight model available for public download. The model features 2.8 trillion parameters and a 1-million-token context window, utilizing a mixture-of-experts design that activates 104 billion parameters at a time. Due to its size, the model requires significant multi-GPU server infrastructure to run via Hugging Face.

The release coincided with accusations from the United States government that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable model and utilized restricted Nvidia hardware during training. These developments follow a surge in daily sales and a pursuit of a new funding round at a US$50 billion valuation, with the company considering a Hong Kong initial public offering this year.

In response to the geopolitical tensions surrounding open-weight models, a coalition of 50 companies, including OpenAI, Google, and Nvidia, urged the U.S. government to avoid sweeping restrictions on downloadable models to protect cybersecurity research and innovation. Anthropic and Amazon declined to sign the letter.
