Moonshot AI Releases Kimi K3 Open-Weight Model

Beijing-based Moonshot AI released the weights for its Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model on July 27, 2026. The model is currently the world's largest open-weight AI, featuring a mixture-of-experts architecture with 2.8 trillion parameters and a 1-million-token context window. While the weights allow developers to download and modify the technology, the company issued them under a custom license requiring commercial agreements for businesses with annual revenues exceeding $20 million.

The release triggered a sixfold increase in daily sales, forcing Moonshot AI to pause new subscriptions due to demand. This growth has pushed the company toward a potential Hong Kong initial public offering and a funding round that could value the firm at $50 billion, up from a $20 billion valuation in May.

Kimi K3's arrival has sparked geopolitical friction. U.S. government officials and Anthropic accused Moonshot AI of distilling Anthropic's Fable 5 model and utilizing restricted Nvidia hardware for training. In response, a coalition of 50 companies—including Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI—urged the U.S. government to avoid sweeping restrictions on open-weight models to preserve global innovation. Conversely, Anthropic and Amazon declined to sign the letter, and Anthropic and OpenAI have lobbied for restrictions on Chinese open-weight models. The model is currently available via Moonshot AI's platforms and has been integrated into the LM Studio Bionic agentic workflow platform.
