Liberal Democrats Reject EHRC Guidance on Transgender Rights

The Liberal Democrats passed a motion at their annual conference in Brighton rejecting guidance issued in May by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The party characterized the EHRC's instructions regarding a supreme court ruling on transgender people as discriminatory and unworkable, claiming the guidance effectively bars transgender individuals from public spaces like changing rooms and single-sex toilets.

Party leader Ed Davey stated the guidance is not fit for purpose. The motion, proposed by party member Lucas North, calls for a revised code and the establishment of a cross-party parliamentary committee to review legal protections for transgender rights. North argued that the rights of women and trans people should not be placed on opposite sides of a manufactured culture war.

Internal opposition emerged during the conference. Councillor Mark Johnston and activist Zoe Hollowood argued that the motion ignores the supreme court's determination that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. These critics warned that the party's position risks alienating the general public.
