AstraZeneca Invests $1 Billion in Massachusetts R&D Expansion
AstraZeneca opened a new 18-story research center in Cambridge as part of a $50 billion investment strategy across the United States.
AstraZeneca opened a new 570,000-square-foot research and development center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, as part of a broader $50 billion investment strategy within the United States. The company is investing more than $1 billion in Massachusetts to expand its scientific footprint.
The 18-story facility includes 10 floors of laboratories that utilize robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence. These technologies will support the development of cell therapies and treatments for cancer, as well as chronic and rare diseases. Together with a nearby genomic medicine site, the Cambridge hub will house nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists.
AstraZeneca expects this investment to increase its Massachusetts workforce by more than 50% in the coming years. This expansion complements the company's existing research operations in the U.S., including a major center in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
