Anthropic Faces AI Safety Warnings Ahead of $2 Trillion IPO

Anthropic faces internal and external scrutiny over existential AI risks as it prepares for a potential $2 trillion initial public offering this fall.

AI startup Anthropic is facing scrutiny over AI safety as it prepares for a potential initial public offering this fall with a projected valuation of $2 trillion. The controversy follows the resignation of Jacob Coxon, a former AI researcher at the company, who claimed that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI is acting responsibly regarding the technology.

Coxon warned that AI developers believe the technology could kill humans by the end of the decade. Evan Hubinger, Anthropic's lead of Alignment Science, acknowledged this existential risk, estimating a more than 10% chance of such an event occurring within the next ten years. Hubinger further noted that the company is not clearly on track with a plan to prevent this outcome.

Market analysts suggest these warnings are unlikely to derail the IPO, though they may force the company to provide more explicit security disclosures in its filings. While the situation may pressure politicians to accelerate AI regulation, investors remain focused on the company's ability to achieve recursive learning and generate leading intelligence.
