Chinese Professor Sparks Outrage Calling Gig Work Welfare

Zhang Dandan, a professor of economics and deputy dean at Peking University's National School of Development, triggered widespread public anger after describing gig work as a form of welfare. During an appearance on the financial show Let's Talk, Zhang argued that the flexibility inherent in such employment is a benefit, despite the lack of social protections compared to traditional jobs.

Social media users accused Zhang of being oblivious to the pressures of platform algorithms and the hardships faced by flexible workers. Former Global Times editor Hu Xijin condemned the remarks as shocking and unacceptable, calling for an apology from the professor.

The controversy arrives as job insecurity rises across China's urban workforce. According to the China New Employment Forms Research Center, flexible workers are expected to reach 320 million this year, accounting for approximately 44% of the urban workforce.
