APC Thugs Attack PDP Rally and Journalists in Ebonyi State

Over 50 suspected political thugs attacked a rally in Idembia, Ebonyi State, on August 1 and 2, 2026, targeting individuals welcoming Ifeanyi Nworie into the Peoples Democratic Party. The violence began at a village square in Ikwuator and continued at Nworie's private residence, where attackers injured at least 10 supporters and destroyed equipment. During the unrest, a group led by APC chieftain and lawyer Friday Agbom attacked a Nigeria Union of Journalists vehicle carrying 12 reporters, smashing the car and attempting to set it on fire.

Chukwuma Igwe, the PDP State Chairman, condemned the violence as an assault on democracy and an attempt to undermine the 2027 general elections. He alleged that agents and appointees of the APC-led Ebonyi State Government orchestrated the attacks, which left eight people hospitalized. Igwe called for the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services to remain impartial in their protection of citizens.

Stanley Okoro Emegha, the APC State Chairman, denied the party's involvement in the violence. He suggested the attackers were individuals dissatisfied with Nworie's political behavior, asserting that the party would not participate in such acts because the governor would abandon any member involved in violence.
