Koel Mallick Resigns from Rajya Sabha Amid TMC Turmoil
Koel Mallick resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 16, marking the fourth Trinamool Congress member to depart the upper house since June.
Trinamool Congress MP Koel Mallick resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 16, 2026. She submitted her resignation in person to Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan just three months after her election to the body.
Mallick is the fourth TMC Rajya Sabha member to quit since June, following the departures of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik, who all subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. While Mallick did not officially state her reasons for leaving, her presence at the residence of Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav shortly after her meeting with the Vice President has led to speculation that she may also join the BJP.
These exits occur as the Trinamool Congress faces significant internal instability and electoral setbacks, including a landslide defeat in recent West Bengal assembly polls. Parallel to these parliamentary losses, TMC MLA Madan Mitra resigned from all party posts to align with a rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee.
