Brent Crude Drops as Iran and Qatar Hold Peace Talks
Brent crude futures fell 3.2% following peace talks between Iranian officials and Qatari mediators, triggering a surge in Indian government bonds and a stronger rupee.
Brent crude futures fell 3.2% to $109.75 a barrel during Asian trade on November 2, following three days of negotiations between Iranian officials and Qatari mediators. The talks aimed to end the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran.
The decline in oil prices triggered immediate shifts in Indian markets. The benchmark 6.94% 2036 Indian government bond yield fell approximately 5.5 basis points to 7.3612%, while the Indian rupee strengthened to 94.87 per US dollar. These movements are expected to reduce inflation, fiscal, and current-account pressures for India.
Financial analysts suggest the price correction may temper the Reserve Bank of India's expectations for aggressive interest rate tightening following its policy rate hike in October. Market participants are now focusing on the upcoming US midterm elections to determine if the political outcome will sustain the oil-price correction and support a permanent ceasefire.
