Dick Cole Steps Down as Mebyon Kernow Leader

Dick Cole is resigning as leader of Mebyon Kernow after 29 years, with Michael Bunney named as his successor.

Dick Cole is stepping down as the leader of Mebyon Kernow, a political party advocating for greater self-government for Cornwall. Cole has led the party since 1997, making him likely the longest-serving political party leader in the United Kingdom.

He will be succeeded by Michael Bunney, a teacher and employee of Gorsedh Kernow. Cole, who continues to serve as a Cornwall council member for St Dennis and St Enoder, stated that his leadership focused on persistence to move the dial on Cornish devolution within the United Kingdom.

While Cole noted that Cornwall remains one of the poorest parts of the UK and faces significant housing challenges for young people, he expressed optimism regarding the party's future. He specifically highlighted the increasing viability of formal recognition for Cornwall as a fifth UK nation.
