OpenAI Hits $10 Billion Revenue Run Rate

OpenAI reached an annualized revenue run rate of $10 billion as of June 2025, nearly doubling the $5.5 billion reported in December 2024. This figure excludes large one-time deals and licensing revenue from Microsoft. The growth is fueled by ChatGPT's 500 million weekly active users and a business subscriber base that grew to 3 million paying customers.

Despite the revenue surge, the company remains unprofitable after reporting a $5 billion loss in 2024. OpenAI does not expect to reach profitability until 2029, when it targets revenues of $125 billion. The company is currently on track to meet its 2025 revenue target of $12.7 billion and maintains a lead over competitors like Anthropic, which recently surpassed $3 billion in annualized revenue.

To support its expansion, OpenAI closed a $40 billion funding round in March 2025 led by SoftBank Group, valuing the company at $300 billion. The company is diversifying into hardware via the $6.4 billion acquisition of the startup io and partnering with SoftBank on the Stargate Project to build AI-focused data centers, though U.S. tariffs have caused financing setbacks for the project.
