Marine Le Pen Launches 2027 Presidential Bid After Court Ruling

Marine Le Pen announced her candidacy for the 2027 French presidency after a Paris appeals court shortened an embezzlement ban, allowing her to stand for office.

After a Paris appeals court ruling on July 7, 2026, Marine Le Pen announced her candidacy for the April 2027 French presidential election. The court upheld her conviction for embezzling European Parliament funds to pay National Rally party staff between 2004 and 2016, but reduced her sentence and shortened her ban on holding public office. While the court imposed a three-year prison term—with two years suspended—and a fine of 100,000 euros, the revised electoral ban was effectively already served based on her initial March 2025 conviction.

The court ordered Le Pen to serve one year under electronic monitoring via an ankle tag. Le Pen immediately appealed this verdict to the Court of Cassation, France's highest court. Because an appeal to the Court of Cassation suspends the enforcement of the sentence, she is currently able to campaign without the monitor. The high court is expected to rule by early April 2027, shortly before the first round of voting on April 18.

Le Pen launched her "La Renaissance" campaign with a market visit in La Flèche, positioning herself as a patriot against a globalist establishment. She is running as a duo with National Rally President Jordan Bardella, whom she intends to appoint as prime minister if elected. Political opponents, including Gabriel Attal and Edouard Philippe, have criticized her candidacy, with some describing her legal tactics as "judicial guerilla warfare" and arguing that her conviction for stealing public money makes her ethically unfit for office.
