Jefferies and Glencore Clash Over $3.8 Billion Fraud Claims
Jefferies Financial Group and Glencore are locked in a legal battle over billions in iron ore invoices allegedly falsified by traders Radiant World and Sapphire Minmetals.
Jefferies Financial Group Inc. and Glencore Plc are embroiled in a legal dispute involving billions of dollars in receivables linked to iron ore traders Radiant World and Sapphire Minmetals. Through its Point Bonita trade finance unit, Jefferies financed invoices totaling $3.8 billion purportedly owed by Glencore. When payments became overdue, Glencore denied owing the funds, asserting that the invoices were either already paid or fraudulent.
Glencore argues that Radiant World had no right to assign the receivables to Jefferies without consent and maintains that the trader deceived multiple counterparties. In response, Radiant World and Sapphire Minmetals have denied any wrongdoing and filed a $2 billion lawsuit against Glencore in Singapore.
Legal counsel for Jefferies has characterized the situation as a sophisticated international conspiracy and a large-scale fraud. This dispute follows a previous fraud exposure for the Point Bonita unit involving First Brands Group. While Jefferies continues to press for payment, Glencore maintains it has paid all amounts due and that the information provided by Radiant World was false.
