Alberta Residents Likely to Reject Separation Referendum
An Ipsos survey shows 70 percent of Albertans plan to vote against beginning the legal process for a binding separation referendum.
An Ipsos survey conducted for Global News indicates that Alberta's push for separation from Canada is unlikely to succeed. The poll, conducted between October 13 and 16 among 801 residents, shows that 70 percent of Albertans plan to vote against beginning the legal process for a binding separation referendum on Monday.
Only 23 percent of respondents support proceeding with the process, which represents a three percentage point increase from September. Support for separation is most concentrated among men, individuals aged 35 to 54, and residents living outside the cities of Calgary and Edmonton.
Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, has urged voters to support the first nine questions of the referendum. These questions address constitutional issues and immigration, which Smith argues would improve the province's negotiating position with the federal government in Ottawa.
