Imperial Oil Beats Q3 Estimates on Strong Refining Margins

Imperial Oil reported third-quarter net income of $5.11 per share, exceeding analyst expectations due to surging downstream earnings and tight global fuel supplies.

Imperial Oil reported third-quarter net income of $5.11 per share for the period ending September 30, surpassing the average analyst estimate of $4.70 per share. The Calgary-based energy company saw downstream earnings surge to $1.56 billion, a significant increase from $444 million the previous year.

These gains were driven by stronger refining margins and a favorable product mix for diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel, which offset a decline in oil production. The company's performance comes amid a broader trend of increasing Canadian oil exports to the United States, which have risen 9.3% year-over-year to 3.9 million barrels per day.

Management attributed the increase in refining margins to tightening global fuel supplies. These disruptions were caused by the Iran war's impact on exports through the Strait of Hormuz and targeted attacks on energy infrastructure in Russia and the Middle East. The company is majority-owned by Exxon Mobil Corporation.
