India Marks 12 Years of Make in India Initiative

The Government of India and the Confederation of Indian Industry marked the 12th anniversary of the Make in India initiative by announcing a transition from import substitution to global competitiveness. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the country has shifted from manufacturing for domestic consumption to producing for global markets, aiming to establish India as a global manufacturing powerhouse.

Government data shows that India achieved its highest-ever annual foreign direct investment inflow of USD 94.53 billion in FY 2025-26, bringing cumulative inflows since 2014-15 to USD 843 billion. Production Linked Incentive schemes have been central to this growth, attracting Rs 2.58 lakh crore in investments and supporting over 14.6 lakh jobs. As of March 31, 2026, these schemes drove Rs 15.2 lakh crore in exports.

The Confederation of Indian Industry emphasized that the program's evolution is now visible in deeper domestic value chains and stronger integration with global production networks. To sustain this momentum, the industry body recommended focusing on technology creation, simplifying compliance, and improving coordination between central and state governments. Infrastructure projects, including PM GatiShakti and the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme, remain essential to strengthening these manufacturing networks.
