BJP and Samajwadi Party Split Uttar Pradesh Council Seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party divided victories in 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats amid counting disputes in Gorakhpur.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won four seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, including both constituencies in Meerut and teachers' seats in Lucknow and Bareilly-Moradabad. The results, based on polling conducted October 23, serve as a barometer for party support among graduates and teachers ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The Samajwadi Party secured victories in the Agra Teachers' constituency and retained the Varanasi teachers' seat. The loss in Varanasi is particularly notable as it is the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Voter turnout for the 11 contested seats reached 55.24%.

The counting process, which utilized a proportional representation system via the single transferable vote method, was marked by conflict in Gorakhpur. The Samajwadi Party boycotted the counting process in that district, alleging administrative irregularities and bias in favor of the BJP candidate. While the BJP maintained its strength in western Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party's gains in Varanasi and Agra indicate a competitive landscape between the two primary parties.
