AI Boom and Oil Prices Split Asian Currencies
Asian currencies are diverging as the AI boom supports the South Korean won while rising oil prices weaken the Philippine peso, Indonesian rupiah, and Thai baht.
A divide has emerged among emerging Asian currencies driven by the contrasting impacts of surging oil prices and the artificial intelligence boom. Net energy importers are experiencing significant losses, while technology-driven economies find a market buffer.
The Philippine peso hit a new low against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, becoming the worst-performing currency in the region this year. Similarly, Indonesia's rupiah is trading near a record low, and Thailand's baht is approaching an 18-month trough.
In contrast, the South Korean won is trading around a two-year high. The currency has emerged as the regional outperformer, benefiting from the AI boom which has provided a critical buffer against the volatility affecting its neighbors.
