Malawi Opposition Demands Clarity on President's South Africa Trip
The Malawi Congress Party is demanding transparency regarding President Peter Mutharika's two-week private trip to South Africa amid severe national economic crises.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is demanding transparency regarding President Peter Mutharika's absence from the country, noting that he has been in South Africa for two weeks. During a news conference in Lilongwe on October 22, MCP officials Moses Kunkuyu and Jessie Kabwila questioned whether the trip was for private reasons or medical attention, arguing that the lack of communication has created a power vacuum.
The opposition urged Vice President Jane Ansah to address the nation to clarify the president's status and explain how the government is managing urgent challenges, including fuel shortages, power outages, foreign exchange scarcity, and medicine shortages in hospitals. The MCP further accused government officials of engaging in widespread corruption and theft due to a lack of executive oversight during the absence.
Minister of Information Shadric Namalomba dismissed these concerns, asserting that the president remains in charge. Namalomba accused the MCP of creating the very economic problems they are now criticizing and told the opposition to seal their mouths while the current administration addresses the issues.
