Arjun Shokeen Withdraws El Segundo Data Center Proposal

Arjun Shokeen withdrew plans for a 240,000-square-foot data center in El Segundo following strong community opposition during a public hearing.

Founder of Eight Form Arjun Shokeen withdrew a proposal to construct a five-story, 240,000-square-foot data center in El Segundo, California. The decision was announced during a July 9 public hearing before the El Segundo Planning Commission after residents expressed concerns over noise, pollution, and power consumption.

The project would have required the demolition of the Hyatt Place hotel at 750 N. Nash St. to make way for a 169-foot facility and a high-voltage electrical substation. Opponents argued that the developer's reliance on an environmental impact report from 2002 was insufficient for a project of this scale. While consultants from Kimley-Horn claimed the center would use less water than the hotel, the Planning Commission Chair and community members noted a lack of concrete noise data and potential risks to students in the Wiseburn School District.

Following the public outcry, Shokeen stated that he heard the community loud and clear and intended to withdraw the application. The local activist group Sea Change praised the outcome as a reminder that resident participation can meaningfully influence local government decisions.
