Iran Considers Withdrawing From Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Iranian officials are considering exiting the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) due to international sanctions and security breaches at nuclear sites.

Iranian officials are seriously considering withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that the potential move stems from frustration over international sanctions, the 2018 U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, and attacks on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025.

Iran argues that the NPT imposes unfair restrictions without providing security or a diplomatic settlement. Tehran specifically cited the lack of oversight on Israel as a primary injustice. While Baghaei reaffirmed the country's current commitment to the treaty, the final decision rests with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

To reduce external pressure, Iran is evaluating a proposal from Russia regarding the export of enriched uranium. Experts warn that an exit from the NPT could trigger a regional nuclear arms race, potentially prompting Saudi Arabia and Türkiye to pursue their own nuclear capabilities.
