Airtel Africa Launches Starlink Satellite-to-Mobile Service in DRC
Airtel Africa and Starlink launched Africa's first commercial satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo for compatible LTE Android smartphones.
Airtel Africa and SpaceX's Starlink launched a satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 14, 2026. This deployment marks the first commercial launch of the technology in Africa, allowing compatible LTE Android smartphones to connect directly to satellites for light-data applications such as SMS and WhatsApp without requiring satellite dishes.
The rollout follows a strategic partnership established in December 2025 and a pilot program conducted in Kenya in March 2026. The service targets remote regions where terrestrial infrastructure is economically unfeasible, specifically benefiting mining operations, health workers, farmers, and humanitarian organizations. It is also positioned as a critical communication alternative during natural disasters or network outages.
Airtel Africa is using the DRC as a blueprint for expansion across its 14 sub-Saharan African markets, though further rollouts depend on country-specific regulatory approvals. Eligible customers can currently access a 30-day free trial through the MyAirtel App, with subsequent access provided via data bundles. Support for Apple devices is expected in the future.
