Volkswagen Recalls 208,724 SUVs Over Steering Rack Defect

The Volkswagen Group is recalling 208,724 SUVs in the United States due to a defective right-side steering rack mounting bolt that can corrode and break. The recall affects specific models, including the 2018 Tiguan, 2018-2019 Atlas, and 2019-2021 Audi Q3.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that moisture can cause the bolt to fracture, potentially leading to a steering rack housing failure. This failure may result in a loss of steering control, which increases the risk of a crash. Despite the safety warning, Volkswagen and Audi report no known crashes, injuries, or deaths associated with the defect.

Authorized dealers will replace the faulty bolts free of charge with new versions featuring a corrosion-resistant polymer coating. The company plans to mail notification letters to affected vehicle owners on November 10.
