Aisha Wahab Wins Special Election for California's 14th District

California State Senator Aisha Wahab won a special election to fill the House seat vacated by Eric Swalwell, defeating moderate Democrat Melissa Hernandez.

California State Senator Aisha Wahab won a special election to fill the remainder of the term for California's 14th Congressional District. Wahab, a progressive and the first Muslim and Afghan American elected to the California State Senate, defeated moderate Democrat and Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President Melissa Hernandez. The results were finalized Thursday after the race remained too close to call for two days.

The seat became vacant after Representative Eric Swalwell resigned in April following accusations of sexual misconduct. The campaign evolved into a proxy battle over the conflict in Gaza, with Wahab characterizing the events as a genocide while Hernandez argued that Israel had the right to defend itself. The race saw heavy financial involvement from super PACs, including the United Democracy Project, which spent approximately $2.5 million targeting Wahab. In response, a super PAC called Setting the Table spent nearly $300,000 to support Wahab.

Both candidates filed Federal Election Commission complaints against each other regarding campaign finance and defamatory social media posts. Wahab will serve the remainder of the term ending in January, but both candidates are scheduled to compete again in November for the full two-year term of the Alameda County-based seat.
