Employment Hero Report Finds Global 'AI Paradox' in Workplaces

Employment Hero reveals workers in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand secretly use AI tools while feeling guilt and fear of replacement due to a lack of corporate guidance.

A global study by Employment Hero Pty Ltd identifies an AI Paradox where employees across Australia, Canada, and New Zealand increasingly use artificial intelligence secretly while experiencing significant psychological conflict. The report indicates a widespread trend of shadow AI, with workers utilizing personal accounts and self-teaching via TikTok and YouTube because of a lack of formal institutional support.

In Australia, one in three workers use AI tools without employer approval, while 44% of employers suspect staff are using personal accounts. Similarly, in Canada, 43% of workers feel guilty using AI, a figure that climbs to 56% among Gen Z employees. New Zealand shows a lower corporate adoption rate than the UK or Australia, with only 15% of businesses considering AI core to operations; however, 28% of its workers still use the tools without company knowledge.

Across these regions, workers report that AI improves productivity and skill development, yet many view its use as cheating. This tension is attributed to a confidence gap rather than a technology gap. While business leaders generally expect AI to refocus roles rather than eliminate them, employees fear appearing replaceable. Experts suggest that closing this gap requires leaders to demonstrate AI use themselves and transition toward an AI-first mindset that combines human judgment with machine efficiency.
